LOST IN TRANSIT
August 8, 2008
SATURDAY TRAFFIC IS never BAD??

Aug 9th, 2008

11:00 AM rolled by at breakneck speed! Mom and Dad Wenger were on their way to take us to the New York JFK airport. Our bags were all packed and we even had a few moments of relaxation before our chauffeur arrived. After a short stop at a goodbye party for some friends who were on the way to Bangladesh, we were on our way to New York.

We were not expecting to run into heavy traffic, so we even left a few minutes later than we had originally planned. We still allowed over 2.5 hours to reach the airport. But alas, as we approached Brooklyn, the traffic started slowing down. First it was an accident that was impeding the traffic flow, then at the Verazzano bridge, we again crept along at a snail's pace. About 90 minutes late, we finally arrived at terminal 2 and stood in line at the ticket counter. Although the lady at the counter immediately discovered that we do not have the required tickets for Karen, she took about 30 minutes to decide what to do with us. Finally after several phone calls and much discussion with her colleagues, she directed us across the street, around the bend, and up the hill to terminal 3 where we would need to purchase a ticket for our 10 month-old daughter for whom we thought we had all the necessary paperwork. But the gentleman at the ticket counter did not seem to think so. After many more minutes of waiting, the agents finally gave me a price of about $600.00 for the required infant ticket. (Even with this, we did not get a seat for her. The $600.00 was apparently just for the airspace that she would require.) Here Mom & Dad left us and without further complications, and with about 30 minutes to spare, we hurried to the security checkpoint. Thankfully there were no lines here and with no further problems, we raced to gate 4 which was clear on the other side of the building. (Gates 1-3 were close-by, but then the numbers switched and counted down from about 20 or so...Everything seemed to be against us!) Boarding was well underway when we approached the gate. Today's flight was packed. We were one of the last ones on the aircraft prior to taxiing away.
